Phoronix: Firefox 76 Enabling VA-API Wayland Acceleration For All Video Codecs

With the upcoming Firefox 75 there is VA-API GPU-based video acceleration working on Wayland. While this built off FFmpeg, the initial code was limited to supporting H.264 while for Firefox 76 that is being extended...

I wonder if they'll do what Google are doing with chrome and temporarily suspend their schedule while this pandemic is happening?

So does this include X11 support too? As an Nvidia user, Wayland isn't ready by a long shot.

If you want to use Wayland, better to ditch Nvidia for good.

Nowhere is X mentioned in the article, and if you go to the linked bug it's titled "[Wayland] Enable VA-API for all formats, r=jya"

So no. X11 is not supported.

There's this bug you can follow if you want, for the X11 support: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1619523

Doesn't seem like anyone is currently working on it. Maybe you can convince NVidia to contribute code for it, since their drivers seem to need it.

Xaero_Vincent Red Hat and Martin Stránský specifically targets [email protected] Obviously there will be fallouts if you decide to complicate things with incompatible hardware and software.

Wayland is definitely ready. Nvidia is not. Buy more Linux-compatible hardware next time. Or write the X11 support yourself.
