Phoronix: Firefox 71 Linux Performance Isn't Looking All That Great

With each new release of Firefox we set out to see how the performance is looking on the Linux desktop. One discovery we've made is that when using Intel's Clear Linux the Firefox performance is a lot more competitive to Google Chrome than we traditionally see on Ubuntu Linux. But with Firefox 71 we're seeing the performance trending lower compared to Firefox 69 and 70...

Installed Chromium on my Fedora system and man, is very notable the difference in performance between Firefox and Chromium.

I know why Firefox is slower than Chromium, the former is at version 71 while the latter is at 78.

Use noscript and ublock, Michael. It will speed right up for you.

what does "bloating" have to do with these benchmarks ?

Michael, is it possible to hook up Phoronix Test Suite with mozregression to locate where Firefox performance has regressed (like you have for Linux)? I am certain that the Linux community would greatly appreciate your help in finding these issues.

Depends. Is the new feature downloading in the background or using extra CPU resources...

Which eats 30% of performance? That should be a hell of a feature

While the setup is totally valid as it reflects current default settings, it should be noted that a lot of engineering power goes into Webrender and Wayland while the software renderer and X11 are pretty much on hold. So all the improvements on that fronts are not reflected here.
