    You are conflating protocols and servers. Maybe this helps:
    Protocol Display Server
    X11 Xorg
    Wayland Mir
    X11 Xwayland
    Or this: Ok, so what *is* this Wayland thing, anyway?

    MIR runs on top of wayland, what MIR is doing is allowing MATE to use wayland easily kind of like a wrapper.

    Ok great. Now please do the same for Unity 8. It should be easy since it was written for mir, which even though different from wayland was similar, from the beggining. It looked such a promoshing environment, it is a shame canonical had to dump it.
