Phoronix: Some Additional Chrome vs. Firefox Benchmarks With WebRender, 67 Beta / 68 Alpha

A few days ago I posted some Chrome vs. Firefox benchmarks using the latest Linux builds. Some readers suggested Firefox could be more competitive if forcing WebRender usage and/or moving to the latest nightly builds, so here are some complementary data sets looking at such combinations...

This basically confirms my findings here: https://www.phoronix.com/forums/foru...15#post1088415
Sans the apparently unexplained performance hit when forcing hw acceleration on.

Let's wait and see what excuses Google haters will come up with this time around...

It'd be interesting to see how these two compare on windows and if the benchmarks are similar there. FF doesn't seem to care much about linux.

True! They gave us Rust to play with in the meanwhile...

Michael did you disable debug options for beta and alpha? ( JSGC_DISABLE_POISONING=1 ) there's async stack in about:config too, they add significant overhead to the performance

              Michael

Honestly I've never heard of this benchmark.

Why haven't you checked the performance in JetStream (ex SunSpider), Octane, and Kraken? What about the Windows versions of these web browsers?

              I've also found these tests:

http://www.kevs3d.co.uk/dev/canvasmark/ (for me Chrome is twice as fast as Firefox in this test).
              https://testdrive-archive.azurewebsi...ance/fishbowl/ (test with 2000 fish)
https://testdrive-archive.azurewebsi...ce/chalkboard/ (this one is painfully slow in Firefox)

http://webvizbench.com/Default.htm?skipdetect (doesn't properly work on Firefox for Linux - no video, still Chrome is thrice as fast)

It seems WebRender is an almost irrelevant PR project from Mozilla, otherwise where are the benchmarks proving otherwise? Not only doesn't it outperform Chrome, it's mostly far behind.

How much of the perf difference is related to JS execution speed?

We need test results for Firefox on Windows with NVIDIA graphics to determine the actualperformance impact of WebRender, since this is the configuration Mozilla develops WebRender for.
