In general, why is taking so long for updates (Firefox, Thunderbird, VLC Player etc.) to land in the Ubuntu repository?
The last Firefox update took 6 days to be available. This means 6 days without bug and security fixes. 6 days waiting why?

VLC didn't get an update since the release of 18.04 in april and had a horrible bug which made in nearly unusuable.
Well VLC did fix this bug very soon, but there was no update in the repository until some days ago.

Can somebody explain this update politic? Whats the reason updates are so late?

I guess this also includes all the new features of Firefox 57 such as Project Electrolysis, the new Quantum CSS written in Rust, etc.

Looks like the best Thunderbird release ever!

I use it on a 'wide-screen monitor' every work day. "Make it look like Lotus Notes". Yeah, nah. You won't find many people in support of that

Feature updates to software in Ubuntu are only pushed out when there's a new Ubuntu release every six months. Only security fixes and important bug fixes are pushed to already released versions of Ubuntu. There's one exeption, and that is Firefox. And even then, the Ubuntu maintainers has to apply custom Ubuntu patches, compile from source, and then put the software through quality assurance before it can be released into the official repos.

If this isn't to your liking and you want all the latest upstream releases as fast as possible then you should choose a "rolling release" distribution such as Arch, Debian Sid, OpenSUSE Tumbleweed etc...

Just keep in mind that using rolling release won't make the waiting go away completely. Firefox is distributed in Ubuntu like it was rolling release, it still takes some days. The same is true for the other rolling release distributions, they all go through the same steps of potentially applying distribution-specific patches, building, packaging, QA etc.

No, no it isn't....

No offence, but it's well within the "personal preference" area. I'm using Thunderbird on a 32'' 21:9 widescreen, and it's fine as-is.
