    Hopefully this results in more contributors. They could really need it.
    GIMP is great, its just too bad that the development pace is slow.

          It's closed source, and a lot of the data are not straightforward to migrate if they choose something different in the future.

                I was thinking the same thing. I don't really know how contributions toward GIMP worked in the past, but perhaps it was a little bit too tedious or difficult. Gitlab might help make that transition easier.

                  All of the following in my personal option.

                  - Gitlab has built in CI tools that are great to use.
                  - Gitlab while not fully opensource is more open the github.
                  - Gitlab allows private repositories on its free accounts.
                  - Gitlab issue management is a bit cleaner.
                  - Gitlab is advancing quicker with newer features.

                  All in all competition is a good thing. I'm glad there is more than one strong VCS provider to drive the space forward.
