I don't want to come out as cynical, I really want to know... what is the purpose of its existence?

Mostly experimental at this point. It's far too late to compete with anything, but they can figure out things or make mistakes for others to learn from.

Were it the case that Haiku OS were a commercial proposition, then I agree, it would need a unique selling point in order to "justify" its value to the consumer and therefore its existence.

Since it's a labor of love however, no such USP is required. It serves its purpose already.

So why make a beos that supports modern hardware?

Because they can and they want to. That is as valid a reason as every other reason.

The work and effort is commendable non the less not everybody could have achieved that but its pointless... if they focused their effort in the developing of current software then e.g linux would be just a little better because of that.

And if people would stop posting on Phoronix and instead focused on developing current software Linux might just be just a little better because of that. What is your point?

Alternative implies offering the same or better or little less features.

Linux-based OSes does have a list of features that make it a decent alternative to or outright slaughtering proprietary solutions in many fields (PC is probably the one where it fares worse so far). Haiku OS is not really production ready so it can't be much of an alternative.

It's currently a hobby or experimental OS, it can compete only with other small fish.

If you compare it with full-blown OSes with large ecosystems like Linux-based ones (again much less so on PC but still many orders of magnitude more than Haiku has), or Windows (more or less only on PC, but that's awfully big anyway), then it's an unfair comparison.

I can render them fine. QupZilla is a great web browser, also available for Haiku and it renders everything just fine.

It was more sarcasm than fact although I am really curious, do you use QubZilla in Haiku? could you visit this page http://html5test.com/ and upload a print screen of it showing us the result (it measures in a quantifiable way what "just fine" translates.)
