Phoronix: UbuntuBSD 16.04 Beta Pairs Ubuntu Xenial With FreeBSD 10.3

The first 16.04 beta is now publicly available of UbuntuBSD, the unofficial Ubuntu derivative that pairs the Ubuntu user-space with the FreeBSD kernel...

Of course it doesn't use systemd, they couldn't even if they want to. Because anything different that linux goes against systemd's developers religion.

I love FreeBSD's man pages and user space utilities, so I'd love to see the reverse. It would be perfect for my Asus laptop that has some unsupported hardware.

I'd love to see the reverse. FreeBSD's simple, consistent userspace with all of the hardware supported by the linux kernel would be a perfect match for me.

Ubuntu's sucky / broken packages are bad enough on top of the Linux kernel... Why spoil a perfectly good BSD userspace Ports & Portage FTW!! What a pointless idea...

Basically the answer is these people are under the delusion that what's really needed to make FreeBSD successful is to slap a Linux userspace on it, and use the branding of the most visible distribution. The problem is the differences between FreeBSD and Linux from the userspace side basically boil down to infrastructure bits that aren't portable (systemd, udev, etc..), the GNU userspace tools instead of the BSD ones, and package management. The first requires significant development effort these types usually aren't interested in putting in, the second is a mere pkg install away, and as to the third... while FreeBSD's pkg isn't as advanced as its Linux equivalents, it's more than adequate.

Now that said... if they can put the effort in to help solve some of FreeBSD's desktop deficiencies in their attempt to make the Linux userspace work for them, that'll be a good thing

Could you be more specific as to which Ubuntu packages are "sucky / broken"? Surely you are not one of those who think running BSD makes you elite and throw around meaningless insults about other OS'es.

Oh yeah, because systemd is developed for Linux because of religion and they hate other operating systems. Great insight there, one can really tell that you are an expert on this topic.

GPL license, reliance on linux-specific kernel interfaces, plus a bunch of security features not supported by whatever libc used on BSD.

                Totally a religion.

Too bad for you most of the people are using Ubuntu and nearly no one is using BSD. Apt/portage/pacman all of them are much better and more friendly than bsd ports. There were Debian with kfreebsd kernel and nobody was using it. It will be the same with Ubuntu/kfreebsd.

It seems the edit button is missing and there's some stupid facebook like 'like':

if you want BSD to be more popular make FreeBSD/Linux with BSD userspace and the Linux kernel.
