    Is there any recent work being done towards achieving the same with the Linux kernel? AFAIK, successfully linking it with gold is still very much trial and error.

      Not for the past 3 years. The only remaining issue is building on arm with CONFIG_VDSO enabled. But even then the build system will use ld.bfd if available, so making gold the default on a Linux distribution is safe as far as the kernel is concerned.
