Phoronix: Redox OS Ends 2024 On A High Note With Dynamic Linking Progress, ifconfig Port

The open-source, Rust-based Redox OS operating system has published their December 2024 development recap. The developers involved did a great job ending out 2024 with a lot of exciting improvements for this scratch-based open-source operating system...

The ifconfig tool for network management has been implemented on the Redox network stack.
Not iproute2? Although, I guess ifconfig is probably easier to port because it's a much simpler tool compared to iproute2 which is a jack of all trades. Not even Busybox implements it right and I always end up installing the ip-full package on OpenWRT.

I'm really excited about Redox OS. I know it's probably destined to stay a hobbyist OS, but I've always been fascinated with the microkernel concept; it just seems so good. I wonder if a rust-based graphics stack will be part of the picture.

I love Redox OS, but one thing I just don't understand is why they went with GCC instead of Clang. The core OS is already built using LLVM (which rustc uses), it kinda puzzles me a bit.

Iproute2 is _very_ linux specific unfortunately, while the various ifconfig commands have been the standard on UNIX for decades. TBH it makes a lot of sense for a Unix-like system to implement the standard UNIX tool.

I somehow doubt that admins of some AIX or the like routinely configure network via bare ifconfig

As for our Unix-like subj.. it's a research project it makes sense for them... whatever works best really.

              Just when I learned to use `ip -c a`, `ifconfig` makes a comeback!

What's wrong with being passionate about a project?

I was puzzled as to which DOOM map was pictured in the screenshot, till I realized it's FreeDoom. Alas I don't know it well enough to say any more than that.
