        Google Trends for "linux kde/gnome" is left as an excersize to the reader... (the contrast is stark)

              I feel like in general when people have to make a choice, see: openSUSE, Arch, and FreeBSD... KDE wins out, but when a distro is setting a direction people just stick to the default and the distros that have a firm direction tend towards GNOME.
