Cool, OPNsense makes sense to me... now about that upgrade. Trying now , next post will be when it's done (which may be really funny if I am late with my next post).

Anything similar but based on linux? I want to have a CAKE and eat it too if you now what I mean. I want to leverage my linux knowledge instead of relying on something new to me.

Well OPNsense can offer both some delicious PIE and CoDel if you are happy with that. For Linux i think your best bet is untangle or vyos....

This is pretty good, I find it faster than OPNSense but the interface isn't as slick:

IPFire is a hardened, versatile, state-of-the-art Open Source firewall based on Linux.

Nothing really. Linux does not have pf ported to it. You could do it sort of ass-backwards by running OPNSense in virtual machine on Linux host. Dunno about potential issues you might run into.
