Phoronix: "Open-Source Windows" ReactOS To See Improved Memory Management

ReactOS Deutschland e.V. has hired one of their long-time contributors to work full-time on the "open-source Windows" implementation's memory management for the next quarter...

Perhaps the effort would be better spent on Wine, Proton, DXVK or vkd3d...

What will happen first: ReactOS getting out of alpha status or Microsoft changing to a Linux Kernel?

Perhaps the effort spent by Linus in creating Linux would have been better spent on developing Minix back in the day?

Those people were wrong back then and you are wrong now. Diversity in platforms is good.

Interesting question, but perhaps ironically, ReactOS would become much more relevant and useful if Microsoft switched to Linux.

As far as I know, the ReactOS userland is heavily based on Wine, so by challenging those libraries in a different way, they might well contribute to general Wine development as downstream users.

There are some other cool Wine-on-Windows stuff out there, for example a way to run Win16 on Win64 thanks to how Wine is handling Win16:

All these things are "unusual implementations" of Wine, which might benefit upstream ultimately.

I used to follow ReactOS a lot, and even did some small contributions, then I think I basically stopped caring about windows. This was... um... a decade ago?

Still, I like to see progress with ReactOS :-)

It does seem to be moving faster than half a decade ago, and thats good news :-)

Tannenbaum is a straight up socialist... I Imagine he wouldn't say so but this electoral-vote.com site is always democrat biased. Hilariously so this year. I guess he just hasn't seen the light yet (despite 30+ years of being wrong).

Needs SATA3 and USB3 support. They've been around for ages. As long as we can't test-drive it on real hardware, there's no point, other than the cool factor.
