Phoronix: DragonFlyBSD Lands New EXT2/3/4 File-System Driver

While DragonFlyBSD has its own, original HAMMER2 file-system, for those needing to access data from EXT2/EXT3/EXT4 file-systems, there is a brand new "ext2fs" driver implementation for this BSD operating system...

That FreeBSD driver doesn't work the best with ext4 drives. Gives me headaches. It seems like you really need to format your drives ext2 or deal with the severe limitations of FAT32 drives. ExFAT on the *BSDs isn't in near as good as shape as on Linux. The UFS/FFS file system used by FreeBSD, OpenBSD, and NetBSD and probably Dragonfly too isn't 100% compatible between operating systems and the Linux version of UFS is experimental or that would be a good cross platform file system.

I''m guessing that besides FAT the only other filesystem supported well and widely across OSs is ISO 9660. Too bad it's not really suitable as general filesystem for file sharing purposes (e.g. on memory sticks it's read only). UDF would work but it's not widely supported.

Use NTFS for cross-platform file transfers? Should work even on OpenBSD just fine. I use same NTFS-formatted drive for data storage and movement between Win10 and FreeBSD.

OpenBSD could probably use BSD-licensed ext3/ext4..

Wonder if we will see a port of HAMMER2 to linux.

NIH. Not bloody likely with the general attitude of supremacy prevalent in Linux camp.

it has nothing to do with attitude. code doesn't write itself, somebody has to go and write it. if you need hammer2 driver for linux, you have to write it or pay someone to write it. linux supports dozens of filesystem, most of them were not invented in linux. they just had more demand than clueless form posts. xfs, being pushed by redhat, was invented in irix

Afaik it does not offer features that other network filesystems on Linux also offer, and there are A LOT of network filesystems on Linux already.

Yeah because this attitude stopped people from porting ZFS and this out-of-tree effort from becoming the OpenZFS upstream, dethroning Illumos.

Face it, none is giving a crap about HAMMER2.
