While newer Linux distributions have run into problems on the new AMD Zen 2 desktop CPUs (fixed by a systemd patch or fundamentally by a BIOS update) and DragonFlyBSD needed a separate boot fix, FreeBSD 12.0 installed out-of-the-box fine on the AMD Ryzen 9 3900X test system with ASUS ROG CROSSHAIR VIII HERO WiFi motherboard.

Valid point, but there are currently systemd bugs that stop newer distros from booting on these CPUs.

"current stack performance" is exactly nil, when the systems won't even boot. Besides, LTS is liable to get newer changes, especially hardware support-related ones, backported.

People typically pick the latest LTS version for production use so this test shows how their system is going to perform in real life. It's a valid and useful benchmark.

Previous BSD benchmarks have always been a mixed bag of results with most versions winning in some area.
