Over the past decade there's been talks on a few occasions about either spinning NetBSD as a desktop platform or offering up various desktop usability improvements to make it easier to use this BSD as a desktop operating system. In 2019 there still isn't a great desktop experience to NetBSD but the new "OS108" is seeking to improve that with a NetBSD OS paired with the MATE desktop environment...

If it's anywhere close to how well GhostBSD+Mate works then it oughta be a great OS. Nice to see the BSD flavors getting some desktop love and I wish OS108 all the best.

Any plans of benchmarking NetBSD or os108 against the other BSDs and the standard gamut of Clear, Ubuntu, Fedora, and Manjaro? That would be really interesting to see since NetBSD is rarely talked about on here.

I'd like to see too. Of course NetBSD has always focused on portability and not performance like FreeBSD.

I'm wondering if it's systemd, GPL related, or Linux fragmentation -- think about it, it seems like everyone and their mother has a no-systemd-fork of all the major Linux distributions so why bother there, LTO/PGO/etc forked distributions require a lot more skills (and more bitchin' hardware) than the average developer has so those aren't likely, distributions like Tumbleweed/Manjaro/Mint have the noob-level gaming users covered so why reinvent the wheel, X Linux distribution covers Y niche so why bother, damn near every desktop environment or window manager or whatever usually has their own distribution, we're pretty much tarded to try to make yet another server OS regardless of the core OS...that pretty much leaves us with BSD to use as your "I'm frickin bored" project if you want to do something different.

Btw, "TrueOS" is the new name of PC-BSD which is pretty old, DragonflyBSD isn't new either
