With the in-development Linux 4.17 kernel there is the long-awaited discrete GPU support in good shape at least for hardware like Polaris and Fiji. While the latest and greatest AMD GPUs are the Vega family, more work has been needed for AMDKFD support. Unfortunately those Vega changes didn't make it in for Linux 4.17, but those patches are now available...

So, how is ROCM going to handle this? They only support Ubuntu LTS and the new Bionic Beaver LTS will only be using the 4.15 kernel. The ROCM GitHub rumour is that they're dropping the PCIE atomics requirement so you can use ROCM on large mining rigs, but if you can't even use Vega's for another year or 2 that would be kinda silly.

Personally, until ROCM is stable and fully supported they should be using the latest releases of Ubuntu.

It's kinda sad to see that there is just one HSA compliant runtime. Is there any software that takes advantage of HSA besides ROCm?

Ubuntu 18.04 will get newer kernels by HWE Stacks during it's lifetime. This is only a dealbreaker for the first moment, but not for a 18.04.2 release, and there sure will be newer kernels inside for example the kernel mainline ppa even before that.
