This is the one question that hasn't been detailed in a while: Why is catalyst so much quicker then open-source?

I'm sure the differences in performance are well understood, and it's not a trivial or yet important gap to close, so let's lay it out there!

My impression is that when this gallium+llvm conversion is all finished, we'll be able to add few optimizers and close the gap, but we'll be spending the next year or so finishing all the conversion/plumbing.

Not that I mind, I think that the true priority is in moving to wayland...
