This is neither a proof nor a disproof of the safety of nuclear power plants. However, the Chernobyl disaster clearly show that there are safety issues, even if the reactor was not designed for safety first. Given that it is a political decision on whether we value the benefits of nuclear power (e.g. low CO2 footprint) higher than its risks.
