  • A request for a comparison of ZFS encryption methods

I've been looking to switch to ZFS for my NAS, but looking around the net, it seems that no one has done a thorough comparison of even the most common ZFS configurations.

What I'd really like to see is a comparison of:

    ZoL on Ubuntu 20.04
    ZoL on Debian
    ZoL on Arch
    ZoL on FreeBSD current
    ZoL on FreeBSD 12

    ZoL on Ubuntu 20.04 w/LUKS
    ZoL on Debian w/LUKS
    ZoL on Arch w/LUKS
    ZoL on FreeBSD current w/GELI
    ZoL on FreeBSD 12 w/GELI

    ZoL on Ubuntu 20.04 w/LUKS
    ZoL on Debian w/LUKS
    ZoL on Arch w/LUKS
    ZoL on FreeBSD current w/LUKS
    ZoL on FreeBSD 12 w/LUKS

ZoL on Ubuntu 20.04 w/native ZFS encryption
ZoL on Debian w/native ZFS encryption
ZoL on Arch w/native ZFS encryption
ZoL on FreeBSD current w/native ZFS encryption
ZoL on FreeBSD 12 w/native ZFS encryption

ZoL on Ubuntu 20.04 w/LUKS & native ZFS encryption
ZoL on Debian w/LUKS & native ZFS encryption
ZoL on Arch w/LUKS & native ZFS encryption
ZoL on FreeBSD current w/GELI & native ZFS encryption
ZoL on FreeBSD 12 w/GELI & native ZFS encryption

I realize that this is a big endeavor, but I think it would be a really useful resource for many. The reason why I would also like to see a benchmark of the seemingly redundant case where both full-disk and native ZFS encryption is enable, is because it provides the useful combination of the known stability of LUKS and GELI, which have been around for ages, with the ability to easily do encrypted backups using ZFS' built-in tools.

If even a subset of these tests could be done, it would be really helpful for me and many others.

Unfortunately a big comparison so likely not feasible unless a number of premium supporters request such test.

Would a smaller test be feasible? I will gladly pay some amount to see it happen.
