Like, pretty much anything that isn't a PHPBB style monstrosity from the 90s/early 00s?

I think Discourse https://www.discourse.org/about would be a good option, but I'd take just about anything over this.

Be fair. This is a free forum and it works. would be better to say what didn't work or what should be improved.

For example, a better mobile experience would be very much appreciated by me, and I'm sure many others.

Ignore list is hard to add to
Ignore list usually doesn't work (you still see posts from people on your list)

pretty much every aspect of classic phpbb-style board UX/UI is sub-optimal or outright bad.
settings layout is poor and navigation controls suck in particular, but a more modern design language is just better all around

I haven't tried to use it on mobile, but I imagine it's not great, as you say.
