I'm not entirely familiar with how each benchmark works yet, but aren't those "timed" benches where less is better? Does this mean that we can't compare <1.4 results with 1.4+ results? (regarding these benches only, of course)

That is correct, but PTS handles that appropriately. If you try to compare a test result from say Phoronix Test Suite 1.2.2 and 1.4.0 and there was a major change to a test in between there, it will automatically recognize that and shouldn't compare the results but would make two separate graphs showing one underneath the other.
