Never ran it as root.
I installed it via pacman (I'm on Arch Linux), and it will throw all those errors.
I tried to work around it by downloading the "generic distribution" from PTS website and installing everything in my home dir, but the result is the same.
I have resolved this by installing the .deb from the PTS website in another machine that is running Ubuntu 14.04.
This really seems to be something that is Arch specific, so I'll just try to open a bug there (I also tried to create a new user and make a local install in my Arch machine, but it produced the same result).
I'll report back when (if) I get to the bottom of this.
