To SystemCrasher: usually generating fake http request should only be CPU intensive. Whereas Nginx would have to handle IOs (at least if not all files can fit in memory). In addition, this phoronix-test-suite test profiles is having Nginx configured in a simple way with just one worker. So if the test machine is at least a dual or more core CPU, it might be sufficient not just to benchmark the benchmark tool itself :-)
Anyway, I was not after benchmarking using ab and comparing Apache vs Nginx. I wanted to test 3 different hardware. And once I manage to run the test, I would need to analyse exactly what is being benchmarked to give conclusion, but it will give me at least some starting materials.
