Phoronix: Announcing PTS Desktop Live 2009.3

It has been no secret that we have been working to create our own Linux distribution that is designed to run off a Live DVD/USB device and would provide a standardized free software stack for running hardware benchmarks whether you are a computer review web-site like us, an independent hardware vendor interested in seeing how well their hardware performs on Linux, or just a hobbyist wishing to compare your system's performance against that of your friends. We first shared our plans for this a few months ago when talking about driving Linux-based benchmarking with Sandtorg (a.k.a. Phoronix Test Suite 2.0). We also briefly mentioned this Linux OS again last week when providing a detailed guide to Phoronix Test Suite 2.0, but today we are formally announcing PTS Desktop Live 2009.3 (codenamed "Gernlinden"). PTS Desktop Live is being released as a free download in tandem with the release of Phoronix Test Suite 2.0 on the 4th of August.

I am having this same issue. I also tried the Safe Graphics Mode and acpi=off, but I'm stuck at the login prompt every time.

    Code:
    * Checking battery state...          [OK]

    (screen flickers)

    PTS Desktop Live 2009.3 (Gernlinden)
     tty1

    Gernlinden login:
All the * items show as [OK] during boot, but there are a few errors towards the beginning. Pressing the pause key does nothing. They scroll by too fast for me to write them all down, but here is what I managed to get:

    Code:
    /init: line 1: can't open /dev/sda: no such file
    unable to open '/dev/sda'
    /init: line 1: can't open /dev/sdb: no such file
    unable to open '/dev/sdb'

    ...

    sed:/root (something, something) splash
    unable to open
I guess I can't look at the boot log if I can't even log in...

As for my hardware, it's the Asus Maximus III Formula with an i7-860 and 2x2GB Corsair Dominator DDR3 sticks. Graphics is the PNY NVIDIA Quadro FX 580. I've tried burning this to a DVD-R as well as using UbuntuLiveUSBImager to make a persistent bootable usb version.

What steps do I need to take to troubleshoot this?

For those pining for a torrent, I've uploaded one to Mininova here:
    Clicky.

I'll leave my machines on for as long as I can, which would be pretty long - easily twelve to eighteen hours.

    Cheers.

borisk: what hardware are you using? Sounds like a hardware problem, it shouldn't do that. And the password is randomly generated.

Rapidshare links for PTS Live CD 2009.03

Upon reflection, I decided against starting a PTS Live CD torrent. My upload speed isn't very high, and my PC isn't kept on all the time. It would probably be more frustrating to get it off an intermittent torrent than Softpedia, and I'd be afraid that people would just give up on it.

Instead, I broke apart the .iso file into 6 .rar files and uploaded them to rapidshare.com:

    http://rapidshare.com/users/9HP7TZ
    http://rapidshare.com/files/26492094...9_03.part1.rar
    http://rapidshare.com/files/26493940...9_03.part2.rar
    http://rapidshare.com/files/26494709...9_03.part3.rar
    http://rapidshare.com/files/26495292...9_03.part4.rar
    http://rapidshare.com/files/26493223...9_03.part5.rar
    http://rapidshare.com/files/26492555...9_03.part6.rar

There is no password, and any RAR utility should be able to reconstruct the original .iso file.

If the 15 min. wait between free downloads imposed by Rapidshare becomes too onerous, you could purchase a premium account. You could also help me by clicking on this link to buy the premium account, though this is not absolutely necessary.

I think that even with the 15 min. wait between free downloads, you should be able to get all of the parts in about two hours if you have a fast Internet connection. That's about half the time it took me to get the file from Softpedia. ymmv.
