Phoronix: Unity 7 Hoping To Become An Official Flavor For Ubuntu 18.04 LTS

While Canonical abandoned their work on the Unity desktop environment in favor of the Unity-inspired customized GNOME Shell that debuted in Ubuntu 17.10, some within the community have remained interested in maintaining Unity 7 and even getting it into an official spin/flavor of Ubuntu...

A wiser community effort would it be to make Ubuntu 18's GNOME design a actual GNOME flavor by extensions and packages which can be installed on other linux too. Sadly there are people already infected with an unhealthy attitude towards to Linux ecosystem.

I believe Unity usability to be superior to that of Gnome 3, but that does not come free. I remember something about the need of Canonical keeping patches to allow GTK apps to display a menu in the Unity top bar. This burden was a motive for them to give up on Unity.

So, are this guys thinking of maintaining those patches themselves, or they will drop that space saving feature in exchange of easy o maintenance?

No thanks. Its time for Unity 7 and Compiz to just die. Now there is GNOME Shell with the Unity extension to supersede that.

There is NO gnome shell extension that make is look like Unity 1:1. Actually gnome shell is very ugly and I will be more than happy if the Unity flavor takes ground.

It would be superb if gnome community accepts Canonical's patches and they can have runtime switch for this menu behavior.

Only if the patches are sane. Unity 7 codes are an utter mess.

Plotinus superseeds global menu for many users.

Say aloha to Plotinus, a natty new HUD-like command palette for GTK3 applications. Which ones? How about all of 'em. A HUD Analog (Kinda) Since news broke

There is Ubuntu Mate 17.10 with Munity theme. This is a nice replacement for Unity.

Waste of time- much more likely to survive over the long-term if they rebuild Unity's functionality on top of Gnome (or KDE).

Will likely require significant Gnome changes and possibly an entire fork of Gnome to do, but that was always the "right" way to do it.
