    IIRC the patch was rejected and AMD is busy with changes required. It might be better for SteamOS to not include this patch as it has not been accepted yet. Hypothetically speaking if AMD's patch is never accepted then SteamOS has to either support their own kernel or remove features previously supported. I'm guessing they don't want to do either of those and I think it's a good thing if that's the case.

      That's pretty sick! Valve switching to open source drivers on AMD! All this work made by Marek and the community has paid off, this is quite the earthquake we needed in graphic drivers history. You can see already Nvidia starts to open up and will likely be interested in doing the same as AMD. Come on! It's time for open source master race

        It is a SteamOS beta though right? I don't know what Valves release cycle is like but it could be months until its in stable. They've already committed to using radv for VR so it makes sense.

          Permissive relicencing pushover already taken so much obvious approach over Linux software, that is not even laughable... somebody likely paying for that

            Guys this is only steamos beta for some amd gpus. They did not break hdmi audio in stable channel

              I suspect their strategy is to wait things out a little, keep slowly developing it, then release steam machine 2.0 with far better timing and marketing than they did last time.

              They're probably just waiting for a boiling point where windows gamers finally have enough of microsoft's shit.

                Wow the timing to Steam Machine 2.0 could not be more right courtesy all the efforts @AMD. Ryzen 1500x should be enough for the console, club that with a decent Vega GPU and an open source gaming console OS built with software pieces that well mostly require no maintenance on Steam's end (with debian jessie and mainline kernel and other bits). that's a nice deal !

                  this has been in the pipeline for a while. Valve themselves have invested a lot into the open AMD drivers once AMD made it clear that this was their roadmap for Linux gaming. They and other devs also now seem to target the MESA drivers as a priority. Whereas before it was a second class citizen.

                  but the target audience for amdgpu-pro apparently is non-gaming users.

                      They probably knew it would be a lot of work but still had more to chew on they realized. Which makes sense why the steam machines were not released for so long, expensive and not marketed because they knew there would be a lot of problems, so only enthousiasts who realize there will be issues would buy them and give feedback to valve. So now valve/amd can fix all those things slowly but surely and make an official release in 2018 with all issues fixed.
