    It's the major pain for me to run Linux on my air.

      There are reasons why open source drivers don't make it into the upstream kernel. It's usually do to the fact that they don't implement the interface completely or correctly. The linux kernel's interface for wifi drivers is designed to allow users to configure important things like txpower or bitrate manually. But a large number of drivers are designed to -not- allow you to configure those things. That's why they never make it upstream, they aren't designed to spec or they aren't complete enough.
