This is doing Apple's work for them.

implying apple would be supporting vulkan if moltenvk didn't exist. i have a feeling apple wouldn't be supporting vulkan regardless.... they kinda went and did their own thing with metal.

        Metal predates Vulkan.

No, without MoltenVK or similar solution there wouldn't be any Vulkan support on Apple hardware. So there is no "doing Apple work for them" if Apple wouldn't do any work at all.

I wonder if the native vulkan driver being worked on for linux could work natively, would probably take a good chunk of work for sure, porting mesa to osx seems like it would be a drag and a half

In theory probably it would work but it would require heavy work and wouldn't be very nice in terms of user experience. Can you imagine macOS users (aside from few power users) installing some unofficial graphics driver to run Vulkan application? Me neither. Implementation on top of Metal is probably best pick as it can be provided with application and just work. Also it can cover iOS platform where you wouldn't be able to install Vulkan driver anyway.

Metal currently has best Developer Experience, it is easy to understand and develop on, Tooling is great, meanwhile I always has to pull my hair to find what is best ways to do something in Vulkan. I wish there was simpler api than Vulkan to replace OpenGL
