With this weekend's release of helloSystem 0.8 as a macOS-inspired open-source desktop OS built atop FreeBSD, I decided to try out this new release on an AMD Ryzen 9 7950X desktop to see how it would go.

An easy-to-use FreeBSD distro - the Ubuntu of BSD if you will - is a welcome addition. PC-BSD is dead and I don't think GhostBSD is quite there yet. But why does the UI have to be another Mac clone? I wish they had just slapped on KDE or Xfce and then worked more on the "useful" stuff like the mentioned GUI wrapper for package installation.

Michael, have you thought about using more your YouTube channel? I think that sometimes your articles can work better with a linked video, rather than few screenshots.
I imagine that it means it would take too much work for few benefits, giving that you're already strapped for time, but I think is still worth considering.

I always thought that the main idea of this OS is "hey look, MacOS is partly based on FreeBSD, so lets slap the same ui on the real FreeBSD". That's my explanation for their desire to imitate MacOS on top of FreeBSD. I assume that it's targeted at those who can't afford a real Mac. This way they'll have a system that resembles the real MacOS as close as possible both internally and visually.

Too time intensive, more prefer writing than speaking, and too hard to multi-task with no good quiet space to record either between background noise of wife/child or noisy servers/computers running.

I can confirm. Under such circumstances its almost impossible to have Zoom Calls.

One should mention that BSD is not really known for visually appealing UI's out of the box. There are some nice ricers in the UnixPorn Reddit Forum but thats not the default. So copying the MacOS UI is not the worst idea to make a distro more appealing to a broder less tech nerdy audience.

FreeBSD has a weird issue where the graphics drivers are not in base and have to be installed via ports. OpenBSD has no such issues. Maybe the RDNA2 graphics would have been supported if the driver from ports was installed and loaded.
