Phoronix: Open-Source NVIDIA Vulkan Driver "NVK" Begins Running Talos Principle... Slowly

The NVK open-source Vulkan driver for NVIDIA GPUs that has seen a lot of progress over the past year is now able to run some games like The Talos Principle, which was the launch title for Vulkan 1.0. While the NVK driver is correctly rendering, it's still slow until the kernel driver side is sorted out with re-clocking...

      Michael you meant "nouveau" developers.

very exciting stuff, I hope old generation cards will get to a "usable state" like nouveau is for preformance. but it would also be very nice if NVK will work with the propreitary kernel driver too. it would be very nice indeed.

The only reason why this works with the AMDGPU-Pro, is because it uses the regular AMDGPU kernel driver.
NVK is developed with Nouveau in mind, there is zero chance it will work with Nvidias Windows Port driver.

a man can dream, I dont think its really all that far out of reasonability for nvidia to try and make the their kernel driver work. going about it the other way around instead

and by relying on the GSP it should become possible to avoid the re-clocking challenges they've faced for years
Wait, we can expect performant nvidia cards running nouveau??!

There are no signs of old cards getting into a useable state. All hope for new cards are bound to nvidias GSP, not present in older cards, with its huge firmware blob.

The goal of this seems to be to eventually replace nouveau's compiler. With NVIDIA having open-sourced their own Linux driver and having committed to keep working on it, does nouveau still serve any practical purpose outside of research?

useable state meaning basic vulkan acceleration, doesn't need to be great, just not completely terrible.
