Both GNOME and KDE are used in embedded devices as interfaces. Embedded does not mean headless. Kiosks and graphical control panels are good examples.

I use Alpine edge for desktop (with xfce, kde also works ok), works ok with some minor exceptions (usually stuff that doesn't have packages or musl vs glibc incompatibilities) which I pull from flatpacks.
