Phoronix: AMD Introduces New Hotplug Driver Option For The X.Org Server

Currently when hot-plugging a new GPU to a running X.Org Server, the generic xf86-video-modesetting DDX driver ends up being utilized. However, a new "HotplugDriver" xorg.conf option has been introduced by AMD to allow users to specify their desired DDX driver. In turn this makes it possible for those hot-plugging hardware like AMD Radeon GPUs such as within eGPU enclosures to specify using the xf86-video-amdgpu driver instead...

This isn't exactly new. This change has been sitting in a merge request for a year or more, but only recently got merged. Plus this isn't a new driver, it's a fix for the X server to make sure the same driver gets loaded on hotplug that was loaded before. E.g., say you had two GPUs using the amdgpu ddx, then you unplugged one and then plugged it back in later. The next time you plugged it in, it would use the modesetting ddx instead of the amdgpu ddx which breaks uses cases that depend on ddx specific requirements.

Why would they? Wayland is perfect for their actual money makers, namely smart fridges and automobiles.
