Phoronix: Intel Preparing HDMI 2.1 FRL For Their Linux Driver, Native HDMI 2.1 For Meteor Lake

With next-generation Meteor Lake CPUs the integrated graphics are set to have native HDMI 2.1 display capabilities. Intel's open-source Linux kernel driver has begun those HDMI 2.1 preparations and sent out today were early patches for enabling HDMI 2.1 Fixed Rate Link (FRL)...

So if Intel can apparently support HDMI 2.1 with an open source kernel driver, why can't AMD?

Perhaps because they have legal resources available to gain permissions implementing the closed off spec while AMD's all tied up?

I want HDMI 2.1 support for AMD too.

Having native HDMI 2.1 would be awesome! I could finally game comfortably from a couch! Atm, I'm on the verge of buing a DP 1.4 -> HDMI 2.1 adapter, but the only one available (where I live) doesn't support VRR, so it'd be suboptimal. I even bought super expensive 10m long HDMI 2.1 optical cable last year, but so far it's just wasted money...

How would they be able to do that while keeping it closed-source? Is Intel implementing it on firmware?

I have a similar setup to yours. I have a Radeon RX 6800 on my office and I bought a 20m HDMI optical cable so that I can play comfortably at 4K@120hz on my couch, but it pisses me off that I need to boot up Windows just to be able to do 4K@120hz.
I'm really hoping AMD implements FRL in some way.
