Actually owning a Renoir based laptop my experience does not match up with Intel's claims.

An afterthought....

Intel may have shot themselves in the foot here as one could conclude from the slides that Tiger Lake thrashes the battery rather than conserving it.

Intel, better fix your holes and shut up, because you're sinking. Without LVI mitigation Intel CPUs are officially insecure, so every benchmark is meaningless.

At work our Android NDK project takes 15 min to compile plugged in but at least half an hour plugged in with I5 8535u. I don't think Intel chips can sustain more than a minute of high performance either.

This is an extremely disingenuous marketing campaign from Intel, just like usual. Normalizing for power, there is no point where Intel's most comparable chips perform better this time around.

Nah.. Tiger Lake isn´t really "released" if you go to a store, you won´t be able to buy a tiger lake based laptop..
Yes you can compare it to Renoir and potentially it has a slight edge on it in single thread performance..
Mainly due to the ~1GHz faster boost clock, which operates a single core in a very inefficient region..

Tiger Lake is a 4 Core CPU, Renoir is a 8 Core CPU with ~the same TDP. In raw throughput per Watt Renoir blows Tiger Lake out of the water.. Depends on what you need..

But IMHO both CPUs offer sufficient single core performance to do worktasks like office or web browsing. Where throughput is important, like graphics editing / video editing, multiple cores are supported in the critical code paths, so you would be better of with a 8 core CPU than a 4 core CPU..

However once we are in mass availability, Tiger Lake (Willow Lake) has to compete with Cezanne (Zen 3).. And that already adds a ~18-20% improvement in IPC + it runs on an improved 7nm Node, so Cezanne will outperform Tiger Lake..

Also keep in mind that Intel still has yield issues on the 10nm Node, so we won´t see massive chip availability anytime soon.

They are comparing gaming laptops powered by AC. It looks like you haven't really checked the Intel findings we're discussing here.
