This is going to be fun. Huawei was doing a lot of silicon desgn as HiSilicon.

This most likely will slow down arm push into servers. Of course what instruction set does HiSilicon developers go with in future.

At the end of the day, sanctions against chinese tech will weaken US tech giants like Google and Microsoft, by forcing the chinese to develop and push their own platforms worldwide and to compete more directly against them.

A win for customers worldwide (less dependency to US tech, more competition) and a loss for the US as a commercial power.

You find it interesting. As a Chinese reading these I am flat-out outraged.

The Americans get a free pass on spying on other countries such as Germany and the UK, and yet when China performs security surveillance in their own provinces it suddenly becomes a human rights crime. For the record, the Americans have been spying on the Chinese for decades. They bugged former leader Jiang Zemin's presidential plane, and you have the gall to lecture them about surveillance?

The Americans get to dictate to other countries how they should be governed if they want to do business with the US, and the Belt and Road program which imposes no such restrictions get more scrutiny than any other investment program in history. Who gave the the Americans the right to interfere in a country's election results and conduct regime changes?

China is a socialist country, and while many may not always agree with the CCP it has consistently proven itself to have delivered on a formula that allowed China to prosper. I have 2 questions to you, maybe you have more inside into that, isn't Trump bluffing and he has very little in his hand?

1. if china reduces export of rare earths to the US or other countries where they produce 90-100% wouldnt then in a year a Iphone in the US cost 5000 Dollar? (to reduce the demand to the small amounts availible)?

2. china holds US Debts could they at a point for renewing this debt raise the rate from I don't know 2% to 20%?

3. even without access to Arm and google apps could this big company that has access to state money with nearly endless money and manpower create a nice MIPS processor and heavily invest in openstreetmap data and programs and opensource all of that? For the surveillance you still have the modem which is of course full of backdoors and spyware and root access on the ram. (including the drivers of the hardware), and with that hurt Google and apple massively?

Youtube should not be a big problem because I A don't understand why somebody would watch youtube on a handy and B it works in the browser.

I am not an economist or a business person, so this is just my uneducated opinion.

1. That is suicide in so many levels. China has worked for decades to integrate itself into the core supply chain of most industries by providing labour and raw materials such as rare earth minerals at low prices. Remember, China only holds 30% of the world's rare earth resources. If China goes nuclear in the trade war and restricts the supply of rare earths to the US, it will only give the US a bigger incentive to put Chinese rare earth producers under a national security trade blacklist, as well as accelerate efforts to break China away from the global supply chain by mining its own rare earths, or sourcing them from other places.

2. Those bonds cannot be used as a weapon. The US Treasury (is that the correct department) will not allow it to happen. And China actually needs those bonds as they guarantee a steady flow of cash into the country.

3. Huawei is a global company. They did not make it big by simply focusing on their domestic market. To sell globally a company must make products targeted at the global market. Huawei's HongMengOS is unlikely to have adoption problems in China given that Google services are not allowed to operate there, much less be installed on their domestic products. But for its global sales, it's a disaster. Remember, Samsung has equally large pockets but failed to get Bada or Tizen anywhere close to challenging Android or Apple as the 3rd mobile OS. And if you want a more 'local' example. look at how badly Microsoft flopped with creating a viable platform around Windows Phone even though it had top notch hardware from Nokia and bigger pockets than Samsung and Huawei combined. I think investing in MIPS will set HiSilicon back so far in the competitive race that Huawei is not even going to consider the possibility. Open source is not the solution to everything.

You have to remember ZTE has already been down this path and lived. So this action is not going to kill Huawei. They will be back but when they are they will be more protected from these stunts.
