Will it take years until it's ready and shipped by default like PulseAudio?

By the way, your link to pipewire.org doesn't work because it's https. It's a github site, so the certificate is for github.com. It needs to be http instead of https, or a direct link to the github site under github.com.

No, its security protections to stop rogue applications from recording whats on your screen without your knowledge.

So what does this do over GStreamer and other multimedia frameworks? Where does it fit into the grand scheme of things?

The work split between Pipewire and GStreamer is quite similar to that of PulseAudio and GStreamer. So GStreamer can output to Pipewire while Pipewire handles the interaction with hardware/drivers.

I have the same doubt, plus I didn't get if it's going to replace PulseAudio/JACK when it's done or if it's going to run on top of some other audio thingy such as PulseAudio.
