  • WebP in Firefox soon?

Apparently there is a patch in review to add WebP support in Firefox (so I understand):
VERIFIED (aosmond) in Core - Graphics: ImageLib. Last updated 2022-05-08.

Do you know what (finally) changed their mind?

It wasn't a matter of changing anyone's mind. Firefox was going to do it sooner or later and many websites and hosting providers use WebP now, so it needs to be worked on. Since Firefox is dumping Gecko in the next few years, it's the right time to be working on incorporating WebP and other media formats, which are coming in Firefox 51 and later.

I think the change of mind was sometime in 2013, but it hasn't been particularly high on the priority list. Or maybe Mozilla didn't want to hurt their homegrown APNG format whose single use case (animation) is covered by WebP too.

However, more recently mobile websites have started serving WebP to all Android users regardless of browser. This hurts Firefox users on Android, and may be behind the current uptake in activity.
