I've got over 20 gigabytes of music on my Pi 2 and the max SD card size is 32 gigs, so space is tight and some of it started disappearing lately... long story short, after installing Filelight to figure out WTF is happening I found 1.4 GIGS of systemd logs.

Distro's or your fault.
By default (upstream) systemd logs to ram and discards logs.

Also, "max sd card size" is bogus the same as it is for other mobile devices, it just means the device lacks exFat drivers (the filesystem used on larger cards). Just reformat it with the usual partition scheme and it will run fine.
