Phoronix: Animated PNG Support Is Still Being Blocked From Google's Chrome Browser

While Firefox, WebKit, and other browsers / layout engines have supported APNG (Animated PNGs) for some time in hopes of finally unseating GIFs for being a modern animated image file format, it doesn't look like that will happen with Google's Chrome/Chromium being among the few still resisting support for that file format...

I just installed the APNG plugin for Chrome and while still no APNGs are animated I see some are presented by google ads. So will Michael in the future not only cry to us to disable ad blockers but also to not use Chrome/Chromium?

Google should just say they'll put it in when Firefox and Safari support WebP.

Why bother? Actual video formats seems to be replacing GIF now.

APng/Mng vs WebP is like png vs jpeg. No one is better (png better for draw, while jpeg better for photo). Why don't support both? The web desiner will have the choice.
It's better than fight and force every one to use gif.

            Agree... check out: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=856375
One of many bugs about WebP support in Firefox. All the effort stonewalling, they could have implemented it already multiple times. One of the oft-quoted reasons is XYZ which is being developed will be better. That's fine. When it is available and if people are clamoring for it, implement it also.

I hope they don't support it... i always hated animated gif, it was a stupid hack without any easy way to know if the gif is animated or not if the current viewer do not support the animated extension... APNG it was even worst, it was a hijack of the png format (as the extension was denied why the PNG group), there was already a better format for animated images with all the features needed (mng and jng) and it was just a matter of "NIH". Instead of breaking a standard, mozilla should have created a NEW format, with different IDs and file extension, not abusing other people formats. PNG was build to be a long term image storage format, each extension will help future support of the format, making it less compatible, complex, easily broken.

Today, we still have nmg and jng and also have the webp, so no need to support a hijack and broken format. I vote for dropping the APNG format and use the nmg/jng/webp format instead... there are already js decoders for those formats, so even older browsers can still view then (or even better, fallback to a different url, with a non animated version... that is the browser job, not a image container job)

WebP supports lossless compression so its totally ok to compare (A)PNG vs WebP

Why not support MPEG instead of PNG? It is animated and lighter
Why not support MPEG-2 instead of MPEG? It is animated and lighter
