It is great that people are working on DNSSEC, but why does it need to be part of systemd?

I guess it depends if you believe a monolithic or modular design is best.

Remember, systemd (pid1) != systemd (umbrella project) the dnssec work goes into the "networkd" component for containers or other simple network setups.

it does not. you are free to make your own systemd-less dnssec with blackjack and hookers

Because a lot of people prefer not to use systemd. You may be perfectly fine with it, but more people than you think aren't. The more niches systemd tries to suck in, the more they damage themselves. All they are doing is digging a hole that they can't complete. They are always going to find new niches to suck in. Meanwhile people that don't want to be sucked into systemd are leaving Linux. (after all embrace, extend, extinguish is the very reason many people switched to linux in the first place. And now they have to suffer from even here)

that is their own fault. they will suffer self-inflicted pain and nobody will help them. systemd developers will continue developing systemd
