So you have ACPI in your system and problems with it. Congratulations. Obviously you never heard of ACPI problems before. Or about problems with VIA hardware or VIA software. ACPI is sadly one huge mess, and ACPI implementations of vendors are often even more horrible. I understand that this is not beautiful for an end user but you can't blame Linux for the failure of HW manufacturers and firmware / ACPI table implementers.

Lol, man, have you been living under a rock? DirectX is proprietary. MS does not just open it to us so we can have our own DX implementation. Sure, such a DX thing would make things easier to port once developers decided to use DX but it is 100% in the hands of MS and THEY WON'T DO IT.
Efficient and light as XP? Wow. That's a good one. Compared to Windows Vista XP is actually lightweight. But I could compare it now to CP/M and tell you that it is a bloated mess.

Software taking or not taking advantage of SSE2? What are you talking about?

I think many of you sectarians are too much susceptible or depressed: my notes are not against linux but references to improve linux systems.

Please tell him to ensure to tick the MMX box and have at least 32MB RAM when installing Mandrake 2.0, as he seems to be blocked in the 90's XD

If from 5 million users you pick 10000 at random, that's *perfectly* representative, as it's a big enough sample to average out any individual inconsistencies. You got 1 for Linux and 3 for Windows, someone else got 3 for Linux and only 1 for Windows.

Also, *if* you used the Windows version more often than the Linux one, then the 1/3 ratio is actually representative and reflects your higher use of the Windows version compared to the Linux one. In other words, if the most popular games are Windows-only (like Skyrim), then it's natural that the Windows version shows even bigger numbers, since you can't use the Linux version to play them.
There is always a margin of error when polling random(pseudo random) machines. Without a blanket poll there is nothing "perfect" about it.

I don't think that game publishers should look at the current Linux stats, what you get with a Linux port is basically an OSX port with a tiny bit extra effort. Also all games based on current multiplatform game engines get the Linux port for free, that increases the number of games by the time anyway. I hope that Witcher 3 will run fine directly on release but other AAA titles with new engines are still only optimized for Windows, thats a bi sad. Btw. i would like to know if the new Android/iOS compat layer that MS is developing right now includes an OpenGL to DX wrapper.

Percentage is not the only interesting aspect here; I would rather know the absolute number of people that use Steam under Linux. The % can drop, but the total people using Linux and Steam could increase, just not as fast as for Win and OS X systems, that's it. I see more and more Linux users around me far beyond my "academic" circle. They do not necessary play games, but at least they found that for what they do (i.e., Browsing the web, writing letters, managing pictures from vacations, listening music through Deezer or Spotify) thence, Linux is a pretty good platform for that, at least, not worth than Win or OS X.

I don't understand why some people go crazy about expanding the user base of linux. Is it mandatory for a better life? Just let it be small as it is. As E. F. Schumacher says: small is beautiful. Will you go running on the street with joy naked if linux usage surpasses windows usage? Why is this greed, this grudge, this childish fantasy? Let linux be the OS of a priviledged few who like full control and playful cleverness using their computers and let puberty boys play their GTA whatever crap on windows.

The steam survey never pops up for me on linux, but it does all the time under Wine or Windows.

Sure, calling opponent "fanatics" and calling them to deal with "valid and reasonable criticism of Linux" is very constructive statement on it's own

Problem with Internet that it seems everyone feels that they should underline and make their statements heavy, or otherwise they don't count. You can be critical to Linux without going overboard as most of posters here do. But seems major idea is that it's not a criticism but your POV that Linux never ever be viable desktop/gaming platform - which is not simply true, because it's already is. It maybe won't be for you, but that's not the point, because you are not whole world, are you?

Haha, these comments on the Steam stats are always absurdly hilarious.

Like you have a total lack of understanding of statistics and sampling. Like "but, but it never counts me in", yeah, well, guess what, there's 125 million other users, the ultimate faith of the world won't depend just on you. Yeah, it must have been a statistical error for the last 3 years, sure.

"But, but, there's just this one bug that prevents people from using it", yeah, that's exactly the point, on Linux there's always "just this one bug", except when it's solved there's always "just this one other bug". You get nothing but promises about how the next release of the kernel, xorg, mesa, nvidia, pulseaudio or <insert random package name here> will change the world, but it always fails to deliver a stable desktop gaming experience until like 5 years later you eventually give up on waiting.

"But, but there are no new Linux games and they got bored of them", yeah, right, Linux people grow tired of games but Windows users don't.

"But, but SteamOS isn't ready yet", right, except it's been released to the public and overhyped already, so what. When you got the promises from Gaben that they'll erase Windows from the surface of Earth, everyone was bragging like "now you'll see what a legion we are", but now when it's totally obvious that you are still not, suddenly we should wait another n years, really, it'll happen!!!11ONEONE

You are sooo desperate at explaining and finding excuses. As if anyone asked you to do so. Actually, you're only trying to explain this to yourselves. Get over your cognitive dissonance and move on. This situation is plain and simple, it has always been, you don't need to ideologize it.
