Any progress towards renaming it to something that can be taken seriously by the English-speaking world?

The last commit in that branch was in 2012 which you will see once you go beyond the list of changes. Work on GTK+3 port is temporarily on hold, because there are more urgent things to do.

          Firefox and LibreOffice

The three major software that needs to get ported over to GTK3 are GIMP, Firefox and LibreOffice.
Any other major software needs to be ported over to GTK 3?

Which is closest in progress to getting ported?

Fedora 22 has Firefox built with GTK 3 support. Fedora also has developers working on GTK 3 support for LibreOffice. Note that GIMP is the only program in your list using GTK directly for all of its UI.

GIMP, 1998: Hi all, I just developed a toolkit to make windows and icons easily. I will call it "GTK"

GTK, 2015: We are trying to port gimp to "GIMP ToolKit" 3!

              It's a bit funny

There's a rumor they are getting money from Adobe to slow down the development.

Yeah, we are all driving fancy cars here. But we can't brag about it, because we have been bribed. So we are forced to drive them in the middle of the frigging night. It's really rather pathetic.
