Considering no one has a working crystal ball..... everyone's prediction of when OpenGL-Next is coming out is a guess at best. Remember when Wayland was going to be in use in Distro's and used by most applications in 2 years according to developers back in 2008? Remember how it is 2014 now?

All developers are on Valve Time.

Yep. The truth is that only Khronos Group knows when OpenGL Next will be ready. But if I had to guess than I would say at least year for API and another year for silicon support. Can't wait to see that.

Sounds about right. The announcement seemed to be a bit of a hobbled-together mess and more of a knee-jerk reaction to D3D12 and Mantle and Metal rather than having any serious reason for it.

In the meantime all the new GPU functionality will continue to be exposed through extensions.

That timeline sounds reasonable, things of this complexity don't happen overnight.

    Or Direct3D 12 maybe

During one event on twitch.tv that was showing Civ: Beyond Earth, done in colab with AMD, I asked the guy from AMD something along the lines of "you said that Mantle would be open spec, where's the documentation?". To this he replied that we should be seeing docs this winter (December +/- one month)

I really hope that's going to happen. I would not mind seeing two, well supported 3D APIs on Linux systems.
