    Really? Calling this Ads?

Personally I don't think these default tiles can be called Ads.

Mozilla blog clearly indicates these are some pre-packaged sites on a New Tab. It's nothing like the dynamic ads you see on this website or any other places.

It's a handful feature for fresh users, just like what they have been doing in the Search Box: there are a bunch of search engines bundled.

wow - i hadn't expected such a ok level in a discussion about capitalism in a tech forum
I think communism is a struggle against suppression in every aspect of human living. It is about trying to satisfy as much needs as possible of every single person.

Maybe a communistic aproach (with lots of assumtions and simplification of course):
    What is the desire?
A - Read about the newest hardware and open source software.
M - Work less. Have a stable material basis of existence.

Expectatioin of how to get there?
A - open phoronix page and dont get disturbed by ads
M - Work hard to setup a well-known and respected company to earn money with it

    Problems?
Noone knows anything personal about each other. Personal as
    - How do you live?
    - What is your economical base? (Do you have to work? How long? How hard? Money in a bank? Gonna get a rent?)
    - Do you feel having a safe future?
    - Do you expereance discrimination?
Different understanding of /capitalism/ and /communism/
Capitalism or -how we all relate to each other economically- is fucked up:
We all have to deal with capitalism. Capitalism has ownership as its base. Ownership should prevent us to just take what we want. In Capitalism ownership can change, if both parties agree in a "free" deal. Enforce exchange otherwise (steal, give, ...) is not capitalistic itself, but reflects ownership as well. Money is the way to make deals easy. The production of almost everything happens in capitalistic conditions (exchange of property is the dominat form like bying food). Even further: Most things are only produced cause they promise to bring profit. If a product cant be sold for a certain profit noone produces it, no matter if people dye. On the otherhand: some poducts that (can) kill people bring high profits. Capitalism dont care about people, if they connot pay. You say production in captialism is to satisfy our needs? Then why do people dye of starvation while mankind is able to produce microelectronics? Why do people have no house or are thrown in prison cause they used public transport without ticket? Why do so many people fatasize about good free markets and bad banks?

    Solution?
Well, I dont think we can even have the same idea of what capitalism is and why it is bad in this thread. Why the US is not evil and neither banks are. In some cases they have not many options if they behave according to capitalistic roules.

But what about trying a transparent way of crowdfunding? M tells how much money he needs from the community for not having any ads on the page - lets say for half a year - and maybe it works and can be continued. How much money can he get from 1000 Hits?

    Cheers

Ads belong on websites, not in software. I will not be upgrading to a version of Firefox that has adware in it. I am currently using version 26.0 and that's likely to be the last version I use. I'll continue using this version from now until the end of time, even though using an old version of a web browser isn't safe.

The best way for you to make money, in my opinion, is to ask for donations.

There is so much ridiculous hyperbole in most of these replies.

And phoronix's (and other website's are guilty of this too) completely sensationalist clickbait headline does not help.

    1. All this is is a few sponsored links being present on the new tab page on a clean install of firefox. they go away once the new tab page becomes populated with your own most visited and/or pinned sites. These are just new tab page tiles that would otherwise be empty.

    2. If you have an existing install with a populated new tab page, you won't even see any ads, because they only appear on new tab page tiles that would otherwise be blank (which in most cases is just on a clean install). This is barely even any different from opera's speed dial being populated with example links from amazon, facebook etc... on a clean install.

    3. You can easily completely disable the new tab page tiles, one single click.

This is the biggest amount of hyperbole and people making a mountain out of a molehill I've ever seen. Its just some sponsored example links on the goddamn new tab page. There's no invasion of privacy, the 'ads' aren't intrusive at all.

Google being the default search and being the default home page in firefox is just as much of an 'ad' as this is. Mozilla currently depends far too much on google for revenue for developing firefox, so it is important that they diversify.

So much idiots acting like this is the end of firefox and that they are forcing ads everywhere. their proposed implementation is simple and as unobtrusive as it gets.

And the people saying that they will switch to chrome/chromium because of this... just lmao, that would be the most nonsensical and misguided reason to switch imaginable. chrome may not have any sponsored links, but they do send all of your info to google by default which is much worse.

Truth is, regardless of what a working group is called - a "foundation for homeless children" or "organization for preserving democracy" - its members are almost always paid, and usually well paid. Nobody works for free, not in capitalism nor in socialism.

The problem is finding the golden middle where you can earn enough yet not be an ads circus.
The fact that you even had to explain that clearly says that Mozilla should just go for the ads and don't even bother to explain the motives. They won't convince ignorants anyway.

Most of the reactions are missplaced, especially that the move may well mean that Mozilla is exploring options of loosening its dependancy on cash from Google.

    seamonkey-project.org

    Get back to SEAMONKEY.
The Original modern Mozilla application suite descendent,
that you should be using, anyway,
instead of playing monkey with Firefox all these years now.
    http://www.seamonkey-project.org/
And yes, apply View->Apply theme>Modern to 'normal' browser look and feel.
And you gen Mail client, IRC client and small HTML editor with it. ;P

Michael turned it into a political discussion when he said in his article that he is a "believer in capitalism".
