The foundation might be non-profit, but the main workers (programmers) are (always) paid and paid well, if you don't want childish source code in the browser you better have a paid project rather than a testing minefield for hobbyists.
Truth is, regardless of what a working group is called - a "foundation for homeless children" or "organization for preserving democracy" - its members are almost always paid, and usually well paid. Nobody works for free, not in capitalism nor in socialism.

The problem is finding the golden middle where you can earn enough yet not be an ads circus.

I would gladly opt in to some limited advertising to help fund Mozilla. I think they should have offered the opt-in a long time ago and not allowed themselves get so bogged down in efforts outside of their core are of expertise. If they were still focusing entirely on the web itself, they wouldn't be losing market share to Chrome. Since they are losing market share, they are also losing revenue and having to find new sources of it. I can't imagine an organization like Mozilla having an easy time cutting, but maybe they should seriously consider it. Pushing ads to all users will likely upset people and bleed them of market share even more. This is a sad day.

To the anti-capitalism comments...I like to say that I prefer "free markets" over just "capitalism." While free markets is technically a form of capitalism, it is a form that doesn't exist in the world anymore. Most of the arguments I've heard against capitalism are against non-free market capitalism (at least in my country), even if the person doesn't know it. People have forgotten exactly what a free market is.

It's just some default bookmarks on the new tab page, like Opera, nothing to really worry about.
          And only on fresh profiles.

Chrome does not have embedded ads. As far as I know, it's just chromium with proprietary extensions from people like Adobe and Google.

As a longtime FireFox user myself, I'll enjoy using modified versions that disable the ads. Cause it is open source after all.
Ads are a way of life on the Internet; as a publisher myself dependent upon ads for making a living, and believer in capitalism, great job Mozilla.
Ads? What ads? I see no ads.

BTW, the last time I had ads enabled on your website, a random popup would obliterate my screen. Ever get around to fixing that?

This. Nothing in the original article indicates that it will be dynamic advertising like the one Phoronix does. It will probably be just a few preloaded bookmarks and tiles with sponsored urls tailored to each geograpgical region.

Whole Chrome is an ad for Google and its services

Capitalism is one of the worst possible systems. It's only used because most people are too stupid to see through it. The fact that the stocksystem is still up and running is a further proof that the reason capitalism works is based upon the stupidity of the masses.

As Capitalism is the current system, of course everyone needs money to survive. (if he doesn't want to kill other people or steal from other people, that is.) But it's one thing to live in a system and accept that it's not currently changeable and a completely different thing to not accept but think that the system is the best there is and making a religion out of it.
You mean Corporatism not Capitalism, Capitalism hasn't been used in practice in hundreds of years, and things like "public" companies (and hence stock markets) and intellectual property are inherently anti-capitalistic.
