Phoronix: Bcachefs Changes Rejected Reportedly Due To CoC, Kernel Future "Uncertain"

While the Bcachefs feature changes for Linux 6.13 were already submitted even before the Linux 6.12 stable kernel was released, merging these changes are supposedly on hold due to the kernel's Code of Conduct (CoC) board...

Thousands of engineers work on the kernel without issue. Food for thought.

It's pretty sad that Kent can't see the obviousness of the problems. Don't be an asshole, do participate in discussions and procedures the way everyone else does, don't be a bigot. Kent is certainly not a bigot and can sometimes be an asshole, more in the past, but he still thinks of the Linux Kernel as one which he leads or remotely has a leadership spot and acts like everyone should operate his way. It's more important that the kernel continue to thrive than for it to gain a single promising filesystem.

If Kent feels like he can lead such a massive and consequential project, maybe he can develop his own kernel?

His technical skills are obviously strong but his people skills are not. You need both. This isn't some random project.

Anyone have a link to what Kent said that Shuah did not like?

      Edit:

      > Get your head examined. And get the fuck out of here with this shit.

      > Apologize.

      > No.

Look, I ain't a fan of Kent's but most anyone truly an expert at their job has an ego like that, even if they have better manners. It's not arrogance, it's a recognition of provable fact. Part of being a professional among experts is knowing this is how reality is going to be no matter what you want and learning to get the job done anyway. Trying to change human nature is the thing that would be childish and absurd.

          Wow.

I was afraid this would happen.

Kent just can't seem to stop himself from lashing out and insulting others.

And blaming everyone other than himself for his difficulties.

As I've said before, I was surprised when Linus gave him a chance and allowed bcachefs to be mainlined despite his past behavior. But I assumed Linus saw potential in bcachefs and thought Kent might change his attitude and learn to work with others if given an opportunity. However it appears that Kent just can't help himself, or simply doesn't want to. It's a shame because I also see potential in bcachefs, but if Kent can't learn to communicate civilly and behave as an adult then his file system, no matter the merits, will not survive within the mainline.

It doesn't matter. It's being professional. If you have an ego then people won't want to work with you. Also, just having an ego for everything is very bad. You come into a project with an open mind and open ears if you want to be a part of it. If you eventually gain the trust of your peers, only then can you start to do what you want.

I don't get the drama. Sounds like some personality issue. It would be annoying if this kind of squabbling will kill the project.

                Yes.

I'm not exactly a supporter of Kent, but the "CoC board" sort of things is a cancer that is destroying almost every FOSS project

especially when you read kent's post. This screams COC power grab

As if Torvalds comments are not enough, now the CocK committee is joining in.

As much as I appreciated Torvalds criticism of Kent, I think at this point if I were kent I'd be throwing the white towel as well.

Whether legitimate or not - dealing with criticism is not an easy thing for any human being. But at least it was kept personal. Now a whole committee is going to make a witch hunt. At this point I'd probably tell them to go f*ck themselves.

So BcacheFS is the first victim of the CoC in the Linux kernel. Good luck for the future.
