It's important to understand why Linus Torvalds, as a Finn, does not support Russian aggression. The historical context between Finland and Russia, especially the Winter War of 1939-1940, plays a significant role here. During that time, Finland was attacked by the Soviet Union but fought back bravely, maintaining its independence despite territorial losses. This historical experience has left a lasting impact on Finnish society. Torvalds' rejection of Russian interference in the Linux kernel is not just a political stance but also one deeply rooted in historical context.

Sure, there probably were Putin's soldiers (who probably wanted to backdoor the kernel in an XZ kinda way), but there were/are people who are genuinely concerned about the precedent this sets.
The precedent is basically the fact that states have powers and are exercising them. So, not really a precedent at all, in the wider scale of things. Such measures are categorical in their intent.

We're lucky we're on the good side, in this case. They are giants, and they don't care who they end up crushing when they step. This time, they crush those who might harm us. Tomorrow, well, who knows, sadly...

Also kind of weird to see so many people here pretend Linus is talking about individual people doing some MSN Messenger style trolling, whereas he clearly mentions "troll factories" and "troll farms", things that have been in the news several times in the past decade.

Nope. Hamas started it. If they released the hostages, there would already be a ceasefire.

Oh, right. Lies from Israel that's under immense scrutiny from thousands of journalists that are blood thirsty. Hamas numbers are trustworthy. Or maybe unrwa, which were proven to be connected to both October 7th attacked and hamas. They're the ones we should trust.

Of course, logically speaking, it makes a lot of sense.

Then Linus should offer that as an explanation instead of smug dismissal of legitimate concerns as trolling. To be fair, I didn't read the thread to see if he did.

The U.S. is not on the "right side of history" in every geopolitical conflict, and the onerous unnamed "compliance requirements" have future implications for kernel development.

It's surely is a mess, but it's also completely obvious that Putin will use any opportunity to blame everyone else but himself for his own atrocities. He spends hundreds of millions on his bot farms and they swarm any topics, especially related to Russia. So many of his trolls were already in these topics here.

But more to the point, this is more of a security concern so it's in line with how North Korea and other thugs are treated. Crude and blunt, but better than doing nothing.

Those sanctions were launched 2.5 years ago.
Why is Linux bothering about that now? Doesn't he read the news and didn't he know about the war?
Will there be sanctions on Israeli maintainers in 1.5 years when the news about the genocide in Gaza reaches Linus?

Oh wait... i know one thing that changed:
The NATO changed the narrative and nobody is talking about kicking Russia out of Ukraine anymore, all the NATO countries (who murdered people in Afghanistan just 6 months before Ukraine) now want negotiations. So all the Western involvement only lead to more dead Ukrainians, since they could have gotten a peace deal already in March 2022.
