Ok, lots of Russian trolls out and about
Exactly. It's like hot cakes for trolls. Any normal place should do troll bashing diligently.

Accusations of trolling.. What does trolling have to do with it if people were kicked out without any explanation?
In short, is there no explanation? He suggests reading about some sanctions (does it say something about Linux?).

      State sponsorship.. just unfounded accusations.
I didn't expect this from Torvalds. This is the beginning of the end of Linux.

China already has a mobile HarmonyOS Next. It will be released for the desktop soon. In the next 5-7 years, Android and iOS on the market may be destroyed.
I expect that in Russia this will also prompt to engage in IT sovereignty as soon as possible.

I'm baffled by the naivety of some. Have we not learnt anything from xz? I wonder if it crossed their minds an ill intended person could weaponize open source software or use it to spy...

Now imagine it on a global scale where a country is unequivocally guilty of aggression of a peaceful sovereign state.

Would you give people associated with such state write access to an open source project with global reach?

Linus is right. Every patch received from those maintainers would require extra careful scrutiny and it simply wouldn't scale. Every russian hardware supported could power a drone that kills civilians, as russian army repeatedly did. Neutrality in this conflict benefits the aggressor.

If it hurts the population so bad, to be stripped of so many international rights, they should deal with their tyranny issue then. Sanctions work like compound interest: over time.

I think he comments on the reaction of Putin's propaganda trolls to this move, not on the delisted maintainers themselves. I.e. he isn't accusing them of being trolls, but he points out that Putin's trolls use any opportunity for propaganda they are paid to spread and this was obviously used for it too.

I'm usually on Linus side here, but this is absurd and stupid, what about the Israel v Palestine β€œwar”? (more like genocide, but that beyond the point right now) Why isn't that conflict getting the same treatment?

So it does seem that the removal is a result of US sanctions and since he said "it's not just a US thing", it's probably European (and probably UN?) sanctions as well. I guess he could've just said, "We didn't want to do this, but we have to comply with legal requirements," but resorting to calling all people who raised concerns as "Russian trolls" and dismissing them is just petty imo.

Will all the contributions made by those Russians be reverted as well?

Sure, you'll code between drones on the frontilne.
Russia could have invested in IT sovereignty before, now it's quite late. Putin preferred to invest in destruction and is ready to gift his beloved motherland to China while sacrificing his people. I'm really sad for the good russians that tried to stop the madness that's going on.
More than one million people died in this war and you are sad about some contributors in the Linux kernel development.

                      Good job Dimitri.
