I dont want to self host but if I do have to I will, nothing gets remotely close to the ease of bitwarden

        where to next guys?
KeePassXC on desktop and in the browser; other KeePass clients on mobile. There are multiple good ones, like KeePassium (iOS) and KeePass (Ubuntu Touch).

Proton also abuses open source, isn't their backend closed source? I can only find the client source code.

I see Vaultwarden and some other clients in my future.

Nothing, it just doesn't have the same set of features. Specially the main one: bitwarden is designed with a server in mind while keepass/keepassXC isn't

                  That’s always the same story…
Start with good intentions and open mind,
then success happens precisely thanks to these, then money brings greed and fear of outside, then the things turns to shit.
Why can’t people stick with the key of their success?

I have tried both and vaultwarden is much better.
I just dont want to rent a server and my home internet is too flaky to host a service lol I will if needed to, but ideally I would just not.

it's important to note that proton still has to obey laws. They do have strong protections, and have been honest about what they can and cannot be compelled to disclose. It's up to the user to take certain steps to make sure their data is hidden still. In all cases, it has been an issue of opsec and proton had been legally compelled to turn over data.
